10 human foods that can be dangerous for your dog
Knowing how to feed your dog is an essential part of being a good dog-owner. But understanding what your dog should not eat is also important. Here are 10 things all dogs should avoid.
Avocado
These fleshy green fruits contain a fungicidal toxin called persin which can cause a digestive upset to your dog. However, it is a large avocado stone that presents the most dangerous as it can potentially block the gastrointestinal tract, causing your dog to need surgery.
Bones
Contrary to popular opinion, bones are bad for dogs. Not only can they potentially choke your dog, but they can also cause gut, intestinal damage and blockage of chipped or broken teeth. Dental chewing is a great way to aid oral health.
Bread Dough
The odour of unleavened flour can attract your dog's attention but it should always be kept out of reach. If eaten, flour can spread dangerously in your dog's stomach, and fermented yeast may be toxic.
Chocolate
Chocolate and cocoa-based products contain a stimulant called theobromine that is highly toxic to dogs - the darker the chocolate, the greater the risk. Even a few ounces of chocolate can leave your dog with illness, diarrhoea, dehydration, and high blood pressure, and the effect is possibly worse in small breeds. If your dog appears restless or agitated and you think chocolate may be the cause of poisoning, contact your vet.
Caffeine
Any product with caffeine can have the same effect on your dog as chocolate, and may eventually damage his heart. Therefore, keep your coffee, teabags and fizzy drinks well away from curious tongues.
Dairy products
Many dogs have difficulty digesting lactose in milk, butter and cheese because they do not produce enough enzymes, lactase. The effects can range from a mild stomach upset to skin allergies.
Dried fruit
Raisins, currants and sultanas affect different dogs in different ways and why scientists cannot do this. However, experts agree that they have chemical compounds that are potentially very toxic to dogs - even when cooked in a pie or cake. At best, your dog may suffer from diarrhoea and vomiting and, at worst, dry-fruit poisoning can lead to kidney failure.
Fresh fruit
Like dried fruits, grapes are highly toxic and should be kept away from your pets. The pips and stones of some fruits (such as apples, plums, peaches and cherries) contain a chemical called amygdalin, which can disturb the digestion. Large fruit stones are also a choking hazard - especially among puppies and small breeds.
Garlic and onion
Allium family members (including garlic, leeks and onions) contain a substance called organosulfide that can affect your dog's red blood cells - too much garlic or onion (either raw or cooked) can cause anaemia. It takes a few days for symptoms to appear. If your dog appears sleepy and lethargic, go directly to your vet.
Nuts
Nuts are high in fat and should be avoided by dogs but the most toxic of all are macadamia nuts. They can cause vomiting, increased temperature, tremors and rapid heartbeat.
